So, after the referendum last month I think it’s fair to say that the new voting system was a complete failure. A huge majority voted against it for various reasons, so it’s difficult to see how we can have any sort of voting reform in the UK in the near future. It would have to be a completely different system.
I do partly agree with people who said that the choice was between the current bad system and one that wasn’t much better yet more complicated and difficult to understand. I personally didn’t think it was that difficult to understand, but I did agree that it wasn’t a huge improvement on the regular system. I wanted it to win because I thought that if it lost there would be no chance of any sort of voting reform in the foreseeable future and it seems that’s likely to be the case from now on.
It’s important to remember that although a large majority voted against the new system there was still a fairly sizeable chunk of people who wanted change. I think this shows that even though the system wasn’t very good people do want a better voting system in place in the future. What form it will take and when we’ll get another chance to vote is anyone’s guess. My guess would be not for a very long time after the shambles that was the last campaign! The worst thing was how many people didn’t turn up to vote at all.
