Should spending cuts be slowed?

By admin on May 26, 2011

In the news a few days ago was an economist who said that he recommended the government should slow its spending cuts if growth continues to be so weak in the UK. He said that the plans would need to be adjusted in order to stop the situation getting worse and worse. This, of course, was immediately seized upon by Labour who accused the government of being too rigid. That seems to be the way of politics at the moment – sniping by Labour at the government who’re making mistakes but are without doubt in a very difficult situation.

The problem according to Labour is that the economy is very weak and continued cuts will make it more difficult to recover. Haven’t we already heard this argument a hundred times before? I think people are fed up with all the sniping – voters would be a lot more inclined to vote Labour next time if they could see that they were at least trying to help the country out of a difficult situation rather than just carrying on the normal game of politics. Obviously things like that are never going to change, but it would be a relief if Labour seemed to be helping rather than just causing additional problems on a consistent basis. I haven’t chosen sides on these issues yet but at least the government had the courage to try and make a change.
